California Democrat David Atkins has taken to Twitter to make some outlandish proclamations, as Democrats have been known to do. What he said recently should give every Trump supporter in the country serious pause. “No seriously…how *do* you deprogram 75 million people? Where do you start? Fox? Facebook?” Atkins’ tweet began.
“We have to start thinking in terms of post-WWII Germany or Japan. Or the failures of Reconstruction in the South,” he continued. He was not done there, either. He had some very choice words for the Trump voters of America. “This is not your standard partisan policy disagreement. This is a conspiracy theory fueled belligerent death cult against reality & basic decency. The only actual policy debates of note are happening within the dem coalition between left and center-left,” Atkins added.
This is the typical Democrat playbook, to a tee. Of course, Atkins took some major heat for what he said. Americans of all stripes aren’t going to like being spoken to this way. Once people took issue with the Atkins diatribe, he did what the liberals love to do most: gaslight people who were trying to make sense of what he said.
He tried his best to backtrack, claiming that he did not mean concentration camps in the literal sense. We’re not sure what the interpretation is supposed to be here. He tried his best to gaslight his way out of this but it did not work as well as he would have liked. That’s probably because there are some people out there who actually have a little bit of common sense.
“And no, of course, I’m not advocating “re-education camps” or anything like that. The point is that conservative infotainment is disinformation propaganda indistinguishable from cult programming, and social media algorithms enable it,” Atkins said. That’s a cute explanation, for sure. As you would have expected, the unhinged leftists that always agree with this type of nonsense came out in full force.
“Thank you for starting this conversation. Ignoring the propaganda and disinformation problem would be a grave mistake. We should already have a plan to combat it. Simply replacing the President does nothing. We need actual deprogramming efforts, & we should consult cult experts,” said one of them.
“This would be a start. But there is a LOT beyond just Fox, Limbaugh, OAN, Parler, et. al. It’s in their churches. The theocratic and white supremacy creep are intertwined. @C_Stroop has done a LOT of work on this and @johnastoehr published an extensive thread on it yesterday,” suggested another. So now churches are the problem? That is rich.
“I’m not sure how you do this with the 1A, but the German way has to be the way. Anti-democratic (small d) organizations have to be outlawed. Confederate insignia have to be outlawed. Much as some people like to pretend, more speech really isn’t the answer. It’s de-platforming,” said the leftist who is apparently siding with Germany. All of this is so deranged.
This isn’t even the first time Atkins has drawn the ire of GOP members on social media. He once claimed that he could not wait for older, white GOP voters to die off. Now that AOC is suggesting that we need to be compiling lists of Trump supporters, there are lots of people who are wondering if we are entering a new age of McCarthyism. It’s a fair question to ask when you read a tweetstorm like the one Atkins fired off.
Anyone who says that they are in the business of holding people “accountable” is only trying to make sure that they come out on top. There’s no reason for Americans to be treating their fellow countrymen like this but this is the way of the world now. Until people like Atkins are actually forced to say these types of things in a face to face setting (instead of hiding behind a keyboard), this is where we are as a culture.
