Senator John Barrasso isn’t the type to make a stink about most things. He’s not the sort of senator who prides himself on being a part of the headline. However, he is not about to allow a leftist into the Supreme Court. Barrasso is making his feelings abundantly clear on the topic. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is already working tirelessly to secure the necessary votes.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s successor is going to be chosen soon. The GOP wants to get this process hammered out as quickly as they can. If the Democrats are able to gain control over the Senate, there is no telling what is going to happen next. Barrasso is also speaking out about the Joe Biden Rule.
He pointed out a key fact. When Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was not willing to schedule a hearing for Barack Obama’s SCOTUS nominee, he was only following the Biden Rule. Democrat Senator Ben Cardin also visited Fox and Friends and he wanted to speak out about his party’s point of view on the matter.
Barrasso called him out for this rhetoric. If the Democrats are able to seize control over the Senate again, he wanted to know what the party was planning to accomplish. They won’t speak out about their agenda at this point and for good reason. The Democrats will attempt to stack the Supreme Court in their favor and Biden plans on putting an end to the filibuster.
Any conservative voter will want to accept their words at face value or they risk being left behind. GOP voters are being told that their values do not matter. “The one question Senator [Benjamin] Cardin[, D-Md.,] wouldn’t answer [in the previous block] was what’s Chuck Schumer going to do. Let me be clear – he continued – if the Democrats win the White House and the Senate and have the House, they will change the rules and they will blow up the Senate,” said Barrasso.
He wasn’t done there, though. Barrasso kept on dropping truth bombs on the audience. “They have an entire war room working on this and they will expand the number of members of Supreme Court regardless of what the Republicans and President Trump do,” he continued. Everyone should know what the Democrats are going to do if they have the chance.
It’s not like they are trying particularly hard to hide it. If Trump and McConnell continue to move forward with this plan, the Democrats (with Chuck Schumer leading the way) have said that there is no limit to what they will do to retaliate. The Democrats’ efforts to make Washington, D.C. its own state are also designed to help them with their goals, providing them with two more senators.
In the meantime, Cardin says that the seat should not be filled. A Supreme Court vacancy has not presented itself this close to an election in over 150 years. The Democrats can invoke Lincoln if they please but that is not going to change anything. When the news first broke about RBG’s passing, McConnell urged other senators to steer clear of a hasty voting commitment.
He did not want anyone to make a decision too quickly. So far, there are only two senators who have voiced any opposition to moving forward: Senator Collins of Maine and Senator Murkowski of Alaska. These senators are not tipping their hand one way or another. On the other hand, Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee (who is about to retire), Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri, and Senator Rob Portman of Ohio have signaled their willingness to stand with McConnell on this one.
Biden’s already trying his best to win back any Republicans that are undecided. “Please follow your conscience. Don’t vote to confirm anyone nominated under the circumstances President Trump and Senator McConnell have created. Don’t go there. Uphold your constitutional duty, your conscience, let the people speak. Cool the flames that have been engulfing our country. We can’t ignore the cherished system of checks and balances,” he said. Good luck with that, Democrats.
